POEMAS DE MARILYN HACKER (según ST)

Foto: Robert Giard, 1987. Fuente: https://brbl-dl.library.yale.edu

Pena

de compasión, de empatía, de imaginación;

No puedo llamar “exilio” a mis peregrinaciones

Nunca tan satisfecha, nunca me despojaron
tanto.

Grief

Grief walks miles beside the polluted river,
grief counts days sucked into the winter solstice,
grief receives exuberant schoolyard voices
as flung despisals.

It will always be the first of September.
There will be Dominican boys whose soccer
game provides an innocent conversation
for the two people

drinking coffee, coatless. There will be sunset
roselight on the river like a cathedral.
There will be a rusty, amusing tugboat
pushing a barge home.

Did she think she knew what her friend intended?
Did she think her brother rejoiced to see her?
Did she think she’d sleep one more time till sunrise
holding her lover?

Grief has got no brother, sister or lover.
Grief finds friendship elsewhere. Grief, in the darkened
hours and hours before light flicks in one window
holds grief, a mirror.

Brother? He was dead, in a war-drained city.
Grief was shelling peas, with cold water running
in the sink; a harpsichord trilled Corelli
until the phone rang.

And when grief came home from a post-op nightwatch
two small girls looked reticent over homework.
Half the closet, half the drawers were empty.
Who was gone this time?

Grief is isolationist, short-viewed. Grief lacks
empathy, compassion, imagination;
reads accounts of massacres, floods and earthquakes
mired in one story.

Grief is individual, bourgeois, common
and banal, two women’s exchange in Sunday
market : “Le mari de Germaine est mort.” They
fill bags with apples.

Grief is primagravida, in her fifth month.
Now she knows the fetus has died inside her.
Now she crosses shopping-streets on a sun-shot
mid-winter morning.

Winter licks the marrow from streets that open
onto parks and boulevards, rivers, riverparallel
parkways, arteries to bridges,
interstates, airports.

Grief daubs kohl on middle-aged burning eyelids.
Grief drives miles not noticing if the highway
runs beside an ocean, abandoned buildings
or blackened wheatfields

—and, in fact, she’s indoors. Although her height is
average, massive furniture blocks and crowds her:
oak and pine, warm gold in their grain she thought would
ransom her season.

Workmen clear a path to repair the windows,
not with panes of light on their backs, no messagebearers
these. Still stubbornly green, a street leads
back to the river.

Fourteen years drained into the fifteen minutes
that it took a late-summer sun to douse its
light behind the opposite bank, the boys to
call their match over.

Rune of the Finland Woman
For Sára Karig

“You are so wise,” the reindeer said,
“you can bind the winds of the world in a single strand.”
—H. C. Andersen, “The Snow Queen”

She could bind the world’s winds in a single strand.
She could find the world’s words in a singing wind.
She could lend a weird will to a mottled hand.
She could wind a willed word from a muddled mind.

She could wend the wild woods on a saddled hind.
She could sound a wellspring with a rowan wand.
She could bind the wolf’s wounds in a swaddling band.
She could bind a banned book in a silken skin.

She could spend a world war on invaded land.
She could pound the dry roots to a kind of bread.
She could feed a road gang on invented food.
She could find the spare parts of the severed dead.

She could find the stone limbs in a waste of sand.
She could stand the pit cold with a withered lung.
She could handle bad puns in the slang she learned.
She could dandle foundlings in their mother tongue.

She could plait a child’s hair with a fishbone comb.
She could tend a coal fire in the Arctic wind.
She could mend an engine with a sewing pin.
She could warm the dark feet of a dying man.

She could drink the stone soup from a doubtful well.
She could breathe the green stink of a trench latrine.
She could drink a queen’s share of important wine.
She could think a few things she would never tell.

She could learn the hand code of the deaf and blind.
She could earn the iron keys of the frozen queen.
She could wander uphill with a drunken friend.
She could bind the world’s winds in a single strand.

A Braid of Garlic

Aging women mourn while they go to market,
buy fish, figs, tomatoes, enough today to
feed the wolf asleep underneath the table
who wakes from what dream?

What but loss comes round with the changing season?
He is dead, whom, daring, I called a brother
with that leftover life perched on his shoulder
cawing departure.

He made one last roll of the dice. He met his
last, best interlocutor days before he
lay down for the surgery that might/might not
extend the gamble.

What they said belongs to them. Now a son writes
elegies, though he has a living father.
One loves sage tea, one gave the world the scent of
his mother's coffee.

Light has shrunk back to what it was in April,
incrementally will shrink back to winter.
I can't call my peregrinations 'exile,'
but count the mornings.

In a basket hung from the wall, its handle
festooned with cloth flowers from chocolate boxes,
mottled purple shallots, and looped beside it,
a braid of garlic.

I remember, ten days after a birthday
(counterpoint and candlelight in the wine-glass),
how the woman radiologist's fingers
probed, not caressing.

So, reprise (what wasn't called a 'recurrence')
of a fifteen-years-ago rite of passage:
I arrived, encumbered with excess baggage,
scarred, on the threshold.

Through the mild winter sun in February,
two or three times weekly to Gobelins, the
geriatric hospital where my friend was
getting her nerve back.

At the end of elegant proofs and lyric,
incoherent furious trolls in diapers.
Fragile and ephemeral as all beauty:
the human spirit –

while the former journalist watched, took notes and
shocked, regaled her visitors with dispatches
from the war zone in which she was embedded,
biding her time there.

Now in our own leftover lives, we toast our
memories and continence. I have scars where
breasts were, her gnarled fingers, these days, can hardly
hold the pen steady.

Thousands mourn him, while in the hush and hum of
life-support for multiple organ failure,
utter solitude, poise of scarlet wings that
flutter, and vanish.

Did you love well what very soon you left?

Did you love well what very soon you left?
Come home and take me in your arms and take
away this stomach ache, headache, heartache.
Never so full, I never was bereft
so utterly. The winter evenings drift
dark to the window. Not one word will make
you, where you are, turn in your day, or wake
from your night toward me. The only gift
I got to keep or give is what I’ve cried,
floodgates let down to mourning for the dead
chances, for the end of being young,
for everyone I loved who really died.
I drank our one year out in brine instead
of honey from the seasons of your tongue.

a vos

Makeup on Empty Space

I am putting makeup on empty space
all patinas convening on empty space
rouge blushing on empty space
I am putting makeup on empty space
pasting eyelashes on empty space
painting the eyebrows of empty space
piling creams on empty space
painting the phenomenal world
I am hanging ornaments on empty space
gold clips, lacquer combs, plastic hairpins on empty space
I am sticking wire pins into empty space
I pour words over empty space, enthrall the empty space
packing, stuffing jamming empty space
spinning necklaces around empty space
Fancy this, imagine this: painting the phenomenal world
bangles on wrists
pendants hung on empty space
I am putting my memory into empty space
undressing you
hanging the wrinkled clothes on a nail
hanging the green coat on a nail
dancing in the evening it ended with dancing in the evening
I am still thinking about putting makeup on empty space
I want to scare you: the hanging night, the drifting night,
the moaning night, daughter of troubled sleep I want to scare you
you
I bind as far as cold day goes
I bind the power of 20 husky men
I bind the seductive colorful women, all of them
I bind the massive rock
I bind the hanging night, the drifting night, the
moaning night, daughter of troubled sleep
I am binding my debts, I magnetize the phone bill
bind the root of my pointed tongue
I cup my hands in water, splash water on empty space
water drunk by empty space
Look what thoughts will do   Look what words will do
from nothing to the face
from nothing to the root of the tongue
from nothing to speaking of empty space
I bind the ash tree
I bind the yew
I bind the willow
I bind uranium
I bind the uneconomical unrenewable energy of uranium
dash uranium to empty space
I bind the color red I seduce the color red to empty space
I put the sunset in empty space
I take the blue of his eyes and make an offering to empty space
renewable blue
I take the green of everything coming to life, it grows &
climbs into empty space
I put the white of the snow at the foot of empty space
I clasp the yellow of the cat's eyes sitting in the
black space I clasp them to my heart, empty space
I want the brown of this floor to rise up into empty space
Take the floor apart to find the brown,
bind it up again under spell of empty space
I want to take this old wall apart I am rich in my mind thinking
of this, I am thinking of putting makeup on empty space
Everything crumbles around empty space
the thin dry weed crumbles, the milkweed is blown into empty space
I bind the stars reflected in your eye
from nothing to these typing fingers
from nothing to the legs of the elk
from nothing to the neck of the deer
from nothing to porcelain teeth
from nothing to the fine stand of pine in the forest
I kept it going when I put the water on
when I let the water run
sweeping together in empty space
There is a better way to say empty space
Turn yourself inside out and you might disappear
you have a new definition in empty space
What I like about impermanence is the clash
of my big body with empty space
I am putting the floor back together again
I am rebuilding the wall
I am slapping mortar on bricks
I am fastening the machine together with delicate wire
There is no eternal thread, maybe there is thread of pure gold
I am starting to sing inside about the empty space
there is some new detail every time
I am taping the picture I love so well on the wall:
moonless black night beyond country-plaid curtains
everything illuminated out of empty space
I hang the black linen dress on my body
the hanging night, the drifting night, the moaning night
daughter of troubled sleep
This occurs to me
I hang up a mirror to catch stars, everything occurs to me out in the
night in my skull of empty space
I go outside in starry ice
I build up the house again in memory of empty space
This occurs to me about empty space
that it is nevered to be mentioned again
Fancy this
imagine this
painting the phenomenal world
there's talk of dressing the body with strange adornments
to remind you of a vow to empty space
there's talk of the discourse in your mind like a silkworm
I wish to venture into a not-chiseled place
I pour sand on the ground
Objects and vehicles emerge from the fog
the canyon is dangerous tonight
suddenly there are warning lights
The patrol is helpful in the manner of guiding
there is talk of slowing down
there is talk of a feminine deity
I bind her with a briar
I bind with the tooth of a tiger
I bind with my quartz crystal
I magnetize the worlds
I cover myself with jewels
I drink amrita
there is some new detail
there is a spangle on her shoe
there is a stud on her boot
the tires are studded for the difficult climb
I put my hands to my face
I am putting makeup on empty space
I wanted to scare you with the night that scared me
the drifting night, the moaning night
Someone was always intruding to make you forget empty space
you put it all on
you paint your nails
you put on scarves
all the time adorning empty space
Whatever-your-name-is I tell you “empty space”
with your fictions with dancing come around to it
with your funny way of singing come around to it
with your smiling come to it
with your enormous retinue & accumulation come around to it
with your extras come round to it
with your good fortune, with your lazy fortune come round to it
when you look most like a bird, that is the time to come around to it
when you are cheating, come to it
when you are in your anguished head
when you are not sensible
when you are insisting on the
praise from many tongues
It begins with the root of the tongue
it begins with the root of the heart
there is a spinal cord of wind
singing & moaning in empty space

Esperando

Estoy esperando que aparezca mi valija
estoy esperando un renacer del milagro
estoy esperando
que alguien descubra América de verdad
y llore
estoy esperando
el descubrimiento
de una nueva frontera simbólica de occidente
estoy esperando
que el águila norteamericana
abra de veras sus alas
se enderece y vuele en línea recta
estoy esperando
que la Era de la ansiedad
se acabe de repente
estoy esperando
que se libre el combate que
haga del mundo un lugar más seguro
para la anarquía
estoy esperando
la desaparición
de todos los gobiernos
y estoy a la espera perpetua
de que renazca el milagro

estoy esperando la Segunda Venida
estoy esperando
un reestreno de la religión
que barra el estado de Arizona
estoy esperando

vuelvan a estar juntos
en un renacer nuevo del milagro

estoy esperando cruzar la Gran Divisoria
y estoy esperando ansiosamente
que un médico clínico desconocido
descubra el secreto de la vida eterna
estoy esperando
que se terminen
las tormentas vitales
estoy esperando
zarpar hacia la felicidad
estoy esperando
que un Mayflower reconstruido
llegue a América
con los derechos para cuento y televisión
vendidos a los nativos por anticipado
estoy esperando
que en el Continente Perdido
vuelva a sonar la música perdida
en un renacer nuevo del milagro

estoy esperando el día
que aclare todas las cosas
estoy esperando la indeminzación
por lo que Estados Unidos le hizo
a Tom Sawyer
estoy esperando
que el Muchacho Norteamericano
le saque la ropa a la Belleza
y se le suba encima
estoy esperando
me retransmita
su sueño de inocencia absoluta
estoy esperando
que Childe Roland llegue
a la última torre oscura
estoy esperando
que a Afrodita
le crezcan brazos
en una conferencia por el desarme final
en un renacer nuevo del milagro

estoy esperando
algún indicio
de inmortalidad
rememorando mi  infancia
estoy esperando

cuerda

El mundo es un lugar hermoso

El mundo es un lugar hermoso
para nacer
si no les molesta que la felicidad
no siempre sea
tan divertida

hacer chistes
hacer el amor
hacerse el triste
cantar canciones bajito y tener alguna inspiración
y andar por ahí
mirando todo
oliendo las flores
y manoseando a las estatuas
pensar incluso
y besar a la gente
y hacer bebés y usar calzones
y saludar agitando el sombrero y
bailar
ir a nadar a los ríos
o de picnic
en pleno verano
y “vivirla”
en general
pero después, justo cuando estás en eso
llega sonriente

Algo debo haber entendido mal
en esta historia
Debe haber un error de imprenta
en este diario
¡Me saco el sombrero! Acá dice
que terminó la guerra final
otra vez
Acá vuelven
desfilando frente a
la terraza del café
me paro en la silla para ver
y todavía no puedo ver
la cara quemada del héroe valiente
me paro en la mesa
agitando mi único sombrero
con un agujero
tiro a la calle
el agujero
detrás de la limusina negra
el diario no lo tiro
me siento con mi diario
que tiene la explicación de todo
salvo porque tiene un agujero
y donde está el agujero
falta algo de la historia
O debo haber entendido mal algo
Algo debo haber entendido mal
en esta historia
la vida es intoxicante
pero no sigue y sigue
si se agregan más y más
prendas complicadas
sombreros fajas portaligas
corpiños que levantan y levantan
hasta que salen volando
y los pechos se caen
después de todo
tenemos que quedar desnudos otra vez
dice acá
aunque la fornicación todavía es ilegal
en ciertos estados
Algo debo haber entendido mal
haber entendido algo mal
porque la muerte no es la respuesta
a nuestro problema
Tiene que haber algún error—
Acá está—
Los editoriales dicen
que tenemos que hacer algo
y no podemos hacer nada
porque algo falta
donde está el agujero
sentado en la terraza
de esta cafetería cara
del lado izquierdo del mundo
donde algo
debo haber entendido mal
algo debo haber entendido mal
tratando de aparentar
que todo esto pasó antes
y pasó
es un móvil de arcilla
con algo que falta
donde está el agujero
miro abajo de la mesa y veo
nuestras piernas entrelazadas
nuestras dos sillas se funden
nuestros brazos se abrazan
Ella está frente a mí
sentada en mi regazo
rodeándome con las piernas
Mi serpiente blanca la penetra
habla de amor dentro de ella
ella se queja al oírla
Pero
algo falta
el sexo sin amor
usa impostores alegres
todavía tengo uno de sus pechos
en la mano
El mozo viene corriendo
levanta mi diario del piso
espera haber entendido algo mal

         a encontrar pareja
sin reventar las costuras
  o sigue intacto
desatado

y la suela
                ah el alma
        curiosa concepción
que de alguna manera aguanta
       para volver a caminar
                                                       al aire libre
una vez que se le haya
                                                                cambiado el taco

I am waiting

I am waiting for my case to come up
and I am waiting
for a rebirth of wonder
and I am waiting
for someone to really discover America
and wail
and I am waiting
for the discovery
of a new symbolic western frontier
and I am waiting
for the American Eagle
to really spread its wings
and straighten up and fly right
and I am waiting
for the Age of Anxiety
to drop dead
and I am waiting
for the war to be fought
which will make the world safe
for anarchy
and I am waiting
for the final withering away
of all governments
and I am perpetually awaiting
a rebirth of wonder

I am waiting for the Second Coming
and I am waiting
for a religious revival
to sweep through the state of Arizona
and I am waiting
for the Grapes of Wrath to be stored
and I am waiting
for them to prove
that God is really American
and I am waiting
to see God on television
piped’ onto church altars
if only they can find
the right channel
to tune in on
and I am waiting
for the Last Supper to be served again
with a strange new appetizer
and I am perpetually awaiting
a rebirth of wonder

I am waiting for my number to be called
and I am waiting
for the Salvation Army to take over
and I am waiting
for the meek to be blessed
and inherit the earth
without taxes and I am waiting
for forests and animals
to reclaim the earth as theirs
and I am waiting
for a way to be devised
to destroy all nationalisms
without killing anybody
and I am waiting
for linnets and planets to fall like rain
and I am waiting for lovers and weepers
to lie down together again
in a new rebirth of wonder

I am waiting for the Great Divide to ‘be crossed
and I am anxiously waiting
for the secret of eternal life to be discovered
by an obscure general practitioner
and I am waiting
for the storms of life
to be over
and I am waiting
to set sail for happiness
and I am waiting
for a reconstructed Mayflower
to reach America
with its picture story and tv rights
sold in advance to the natives
and I am waiting
for the lost music to sound again
in the Lost Continent
in a new rebirth of wonder

I am waiting for the day
that maketh all things clear
and I am awaiting retribution
for what America did
to Tom Sawyer
and I am waiting
for the American Boy
to take off Beauty’s clothes
and get on top of her
and I am waiting
for Alice in Wonderland
to retransmit to me
her total dream of innocence
and I am waiting
for Childe Roland to come
to the final darkest tower
and I am waiting
for Aphrodite
to grow live arms
at a final disarmament conference
in a new rebirth of wonder

I am waiting
to get some intimations
of immortality
by recollecting my early childhood
and I am waiting
for the green mornings to come again
youth’s dumb green fields come back again
and I am waiting
for some strains of unpremeditated art
to shake my typewriter
and I am waiting to write
the great indelible poem
and I am waiting
for the last long careless rapture
and I am perpetually waiting
for the fleeing lovers on the Grecian Urn
to catch each other up at last
and embrace
and I am waiting
perpetually and forever
a renaissance of wonder

Don't let that horse

Don't let that horse
eat that violin

cried Chagall's mother

But he
kept right on
painting

And became famous

And kept on painting
The Horse With Violin In Mouth

And when he finally finished it
he jumped up upon the horse
and rode away
waving the violin

And then with a low bow gave it
to the first naked nude he ran across

 And there were no strings
attached

The world is a beautiful place

The world is a beautiful place
to be born into
if you don't mind happiness
not always being
so very much fun
if you don't mind a touch of hell
now and then
just when everything is fine
because even in heaven
they don't sing
all the time

The world is a beautiful place
to be born into
if you don't mind some people dying
all the time
or maybe only starving
some of the time
which isn't half bad
if it isn't you

Oh the world is a beautiful place
to be born into
if you don't much mind
a few dead minds
in the higher places
or a bomb or two
now and then
in your upturned faces
or such other improprieties
as our Name Brand society
is prey to
with its men of distinction
and its men of extinction
and its priests
and other patrolmen

and its various segregations
and congressional investigations
and other constipations
that our fool flesh
is heir to

Yes the world is the best place of all
for a lot of such things as
making the fun scene
and making the love scene
and making the sad scene
and singing low songs and having inspirations
and walking around
looking at everything
and smelling flowers
and goosing statues
and even thinking
and kissing people and
making babies and wearing pants
and waving hats and
dancing
and going swimming in rivers
on picnics
in the middle of the summer
and just generally
'living it up'
Yes
but then right in the middle of it
comes the smiling

mortician

Uses of poetry

So what is the use of poetry these days
What use is it What good is it
these days and nights in the Age of Autogeddon
in which poetry is what has been paved over
to make a freeway for armies of the night
as in that palm paradiso just north of Nicaragua
where promises made in the plazas
will be betrayed in the back country
or in the so-green fields
of the Concord Naval Weapons Station
Where armed trains run over green protesters
where poetry is made important by its absence
the absence of birds in a summer landscape
the lack of love in a bed at midnight
or lack of light at high noon in high places
For even bad poetry has relevance
for what it does not say
for what it leaves out
Yes what of the sun streaming down
in the meshes of morning
what of white nights and mouths of desire
lips saying Lulu over and over
and all things born with wings that sing
and far far cries upon a beach at nightfall
and light that never was on land and sea
and caverns measured-out by man
where once the sacred rivers ran
near cities by the sea
through which we walk and wander absently
astounded constantly
and by the mad spectacle of existence
all these talking animals on wheels
heroes and heroines with a thousand eyes
with bents hearts and hidden oversouls
with no more myths to call their own
constantly astounded as I am still
by these bare-face bipeds in clothes
these stand-up tragedians
pale idols in the night streets
trance-dancers in the dust of Last Waltz
in this time of gridlock Autogeddon
where the voice of the poet still sounds distantly
the voice of the Fourth Person Singular
the voice within the voice of the turtle
the face behind the face of the race
a book of light at night
the very voice of life as Whitman heard it
a wild soft laughter
(ah but to free it still
from the word-processor of the mind!)
And I am a reporter for a newspaper
on another planet
come to file a down-to-earth story
of the What When Where How and Why
of this astounding life down here
and of the strange clowns in control of it
with hands upon the windowssills
of dread demonic mills
casting their own dark shadows
into the earth’s great shadow
in the end of time unseen
in the supreme hashish of our dream

Overpopulation
¿No se puede vivir sin amor?

I must have misunderstood something
in this story
There must be a misprint
in this paper
Hats off! It says here
The final war is over
again
Here they come again
parading by
the café terrace
I stand on my chair to see
I still can’t see
the brave burned hero’s face
I stand on the table
waving my only hat
with the hole in it
I throw the hole away
into the street
after the black limousine
I don’t throw my paper
I sit down with my paper
which has the explanation of everything
except there’s a hole in it
Something missing in the story
where the hole is
Or I must have misunderstood something
The nations have decided
it says here
to abolish themselves at last
It’s been decided at the highest level
and at the lowest level
to return to a primitive society
For science has conquered nature
but nature must not be conquered
So science must be abolished
and machines must go
after all their turning and turning
The automobile is a passing thing
after all
The horse is here to stay
Population has reached its limit
There’s standingroom only
Nowhere
to lie down
anymore
Medicine must be abolished
so people can die
when they’re supposed to
There’s still room
under the surface
I keep hoping
I have misunderstood something
in this story
People still lose
and find themselves
in bed
and animals still
aren’t as cruel as people
because they can’t talk
but we weren’t designed
to live forever and ever
and design is everything
The little enzyme they’ve extracted
that causes aging
must be lost in the body again
All must be begun over
in a new pastoral era
There’ve been too many advances
Life can’t bear it
any longer
Life is not a drug
made from mushrooms
eaten by Samoyeds in Siberia
which fully retain
their intoxicating properties
when transmitted in urine
so that an endless line of men
may get drunk over and over
on the same mushroom
a chain reaction of avid statues
with mouths at penises
I must have misunderstood something
in this story
Life is intoxicating
but can’t go on and on
putting on more and more
complicated clothes
hats girdles garterbelts
uplift bras lifting higher and higher
until they fly away
and breasts fall
after all
We’ve got to get naked again
it says here
though fornication’s still illegal
in certain states
I must have misunderstood something
in this story
The world’s no Klee mobile
and there must be an end
to all this rotation
around the goofball sun
The sun in its sic transit
barely clears the rooftops now
bumps over a Mobilgas Pegasus
and sinks behind my paper
with its hole
in which I keep hoping
I’ve misunderstood something
for Death is not the answer
to our problem
There must be some mistake—
There is—
The editorials say
we must do something
and we cannot do anything
For something’s missing
where the hole is
sitting on the terrace
of this fancy coffehouse
on the left side of the world
where I must
have misunderstood something
as a purple blond sweeps by
and one too-high tit pops out
and falls in my plate
I return in to her
without looking too embarrassed
This she takes as a good sign
She sits down
and gives me the other
wrapped in silk
I go on reading my paper
thinking I must
have misunderstood something
trying to look like
it’s all happened before
It has
It’s a clay mobile
with something missing
where the hole is
I look under the table and see
our legs are intertwined
Our two chairs fuse
Our arms are round each other
She’s facing me
crouched in my lap
her legs around me
My white snake has entered her
speaks of love inside of her
She moans to hear it
But
something’s missing
Sex without love
wears gay deceivers
I still have one of her breasts
in my hand
The waiter comes running
picks up my fallen paper
hoping he’s misunderstood something
None of us will ever die
as long as this goes on
The enzyme bottle
lies open
on the table

People getting divorced

 People getting divorced
riding around with their clothes in the car
   and wondering what happened
                      to everyone and everything
                         including their other
                                                pair of shoes
         And if you spy one
             then who knows what happened
                                             to the other
                                           with tongue alack
and years later not even knowing
                               if the other ever
                                        found a mate
                                  without splitting the seams
                                     or remained intact
                                                          unlaced
    and the sole
                     ah the soul
                                     a curious conception
         hanging on somehow
                                     to walk again
                                                   in the free air
                            once the heel
                                                 has been replaced
